Berlin (dts news agency) – According to the German government, the Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny was “undoubtedly” poisoned. Government spokesman Steffen Seibert announced on Wednesday afternoon that a toxicological examination based on Nawalny’s samples had provided evidence of a chemical nerve agent of the Novitschok group. A special Bundeswehr laboratory carried out the investigation at the instigation of the Charité Berlin.
It is a shocking occurrence that Navalny was the victim of an attack with a chemical nerve agent in Russia, said Seibert. The federal government condemns this attack “in the strongest possible way”. The Russian government is urged to explain itself to the incident.

The government spokesman announced that the Foreign Office would inform the Ambassador of Russia about the results of the investigation. In addition, the Federal Government will inform its partners in the EU and NATO through the Federal Foreign Office using the channels provided for this purpose. She will “consult with the partners on an appropriate joint reaction in the light of the Russian agreement,” said Seibert.

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) will also be contacted. The parliamentary groups in the Bundestag should also be informed.
