Berlin (dts news agency) – The economic council of the CDU is criticizing the announcement by Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD) that the debt brake will be suspended next year due to the corona pandemic. “The crisis mode of the public budget must not become permanent”, said Secretary General Wolfgang Steiger (CDU) of the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”. The aim of the federal government must be to present a balanced budget as possible next year.
“Careless new borrowing and permanent loosening of the debt brake would be an attack on the future viability of Germany as a business location and on the future of the young generation, who have to repay all the debts at some point,” Steiger told the newspaper. It is only thanks to the solid budget policy of recent years that Germany has so far got through the crisis lightly and “had financial leeway to avert the consequences of the Corona”. Instead of constantly incurring new debts for “consumer spending”, the Federal Government must return to “budget discipline” and use the resources available to make future investments, for example in the areas of education, digitization and infrastructure, demanded the Secretary General of the CDU Economic Council.
