Düsseldorf (dts news agency) – The opposition in the Düsseldorf state parliament has spoken out against a complete cancellation of the carnival. “With the best will in the world, I cannot imagine classic carnival meetings in closed rooms with the current number of infections. It looks different at the street carnival,” said SPD parliamentary group leader Thomas Kutschaty of the “Rheinische Post”.

In the fresh air, with clear requirements and good concepts, one or the other should be possible “if the number of infections shows that at the beginning of next year”. Nowhere does the mask fit as well as in the street carnival. “It’s been a tradition for centuries. But you can’t simply cancel the carnival as a whole – for many people it’s like Christmas,” said Kutschaty. Stefan Engstfeld, member of the Green Party in the state parliament and candidate for mayor in Düsseldorf, said: Of course you shouldn’t take any risks – but carnivalists are very creative. “Instead of discussing a total rejection, innovative hygiene concepts, new venues and unprecedented types of events should be examined first.”

And a lot is now also possible digitally. “We already saw a lot of new things this summer – from the prince couple presentation in the drive-in cinema to concerts in the pop-up beer garden to comedy performances with visitors in beach chairs,” added Engstfeld.
